DMDP staff have taken part in two workshops in Laos sponsored by Defense Threat Reduction Agency and Biological Threat Reduction Program to help doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, and health personnel to recognize and manage meliondosis, an endemic disease caused by the the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei.   The first 3-day workshop took place in Vang Vieng.  Speakers covered the environmental source of the organism, animal diseases, laboratory biosafety, clinical recognition, and laboratory detection.
