From 2013 to 2021, DMDP received funding from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) of the United States Department of Defense, which constitutes most of our operating funds. DTRA also funds some of our partners in the region, including World Health Organization and Navy Army Medical Research Unit (NAMRU2). The goal of DTRA’s efforts in this location is to promote the local ability of medical personnel to recognize an outbreak or emergence of a new health emergency threat and to respond effectively. Using these funds, DMDP works to improve the ability of medical personnel to recognize such a threat, order the appropriate diagnostic tests, and appropriately act on the results and to improve the capability of local and national laboratories to perform the necessary laboratory tests and arrive at the correct results in an actionable timeframe.
