By coincidence, I ran into Prof. Yves Buisson at the Pochentong Airport this afternoon. He and his wife were returning to Vientiane, Laos after attending the Mekong Sante meetings. Prof. Buisson is the director of the Institut de la Francophone pour la Medecine Tropicale (IFMT) in Vientiane. He gave an interesting presentation on Burkholderia pseudomallei in the environment in Laos at the Mekong Sante. He was the director of the Institut Pasteur Cambodge (IPC) here in Phnom Penh from 1999-2001. He told me that the Khmer Rouge completely destroyed the IPC in Phnom Penh and killed all of the staff. The IPC was only reopened in 1995.  I told Prof. Buisson about the work of DMDP in Cambodia and he said that the state of diagnostic microbiology in Laos is worse than in Cambodia.
